"Devil's Slide Trailhead, Idyllwild" The heat of the summer drives Elin to seek relief in the mountain community of Idyllwild, about 45 minutes from her studio. Continuing her quest for good plein air work, this is the first of several paintings from around this mile-high community. Idyllwild is surrounded by both the San Jacinto State Park, the San Jacinto Wilderness area and there are many hiking trails beginning in the community. Original oil, 24 x 12 inches. |

"Idyllwild Evening" I decided to take a detour from the commissions list and paint something just for my own pleasure--without any outside direction. (I need to do that...You know, the "artistic free spirit" thing.) I have been to Idyllwild many times, first back in 1977 when I'd returned to California from Europe. It was as if I had returned to Germany, to go up to the alpine latitudes and spend time in the pines and snow. It was solace for my soul, as I missed Europe, having lived there for seven continuous years. So Idyllwild served a wonderful purpose to transit me to California, and I love it still. The town is surrounded by national forest, and the desert of Palm Springs on the north, and semi-desert on the other three sides. Truly an oasis. This is Lily Rock, a favorite climbing destination, and the local landmark, and as a vertical format painting, would find many places to be hung in a home. This 12 x 9 oil to the collection of Anna Leffler of
Santa Monica, California.

"San Juan Capistrano Mission Arch" Back in the studio again, Elin is working on larger pieces for a show in April. This is the famous San Juan Capistrano Mission as seen from one of the supported arches of the porches that surround the beautiful gardens. Original Oil on canvas, 30 x 24 inches
to returning collector Frank Barrese of Temecula, California.

"Two Trees, Ventura" I love Ventura. It has always been the precursor and gateway to the drive up to Ojai. There is a landmark that has been famous since the 1700s when the Spaniards first sailed into the sheltering harbor. On the top of one of the hills above the town is a place where two oak trees grow. The Spaniards looked for them out on the ocean, because they knew the safe harbor was below. They are venerable and treasured landmarks. I, too, always look for them above the city, as it is a comforting welcome, familiar, and a constant. I've painted them today for you in a 12 x 12 acrylic box canvas (no frame needed), as a memory of those long ago drives from Ojai to Ventura College and every trip back to my home area. Also, in an incredible coincidence, "Two Trees" happens to be the name of the road where we will be living if we ever get through the paperwork! $350 from me, if I decide to sell it. My studio will be called "Two Trees Art Studio"... if we ever close escrow.

Bidwell Mansion Afternoon Before I left Chico, I was able to capture the afternoon light on the Bidwell Mansion from the same position I was in during the morning Quick Draw. Sometimes a place just speaks to you, and forever leaves an impression. Original oil on board, 16 x 12 inches.

"Transparent Waters" After the last day of the official competition, Betty Billups and I went painting up the Chico Creek. I found this lovely area of water, and with it rippling in my ears, painted this 12 x 9 oil. from the Bella Gallery in Temecula. |
 |
Evening Trio at Bidwell Park One of the smaller works done in the fast-changing light of the evening. Alone, with cars occasionally passing along the gravel road high in the Upper Park area, I painted this until the light was completely gone, and night had fallen. Driving back to the entrance of the park, several of the artists were together enjoying some social conversation. I brought out a bottle of wine, and we enjoyed some toasts to the heat and competition. Original acrylic, 6 x 12 inches to Laurie Egan of Palm Springs, California. |
 |
"Canyon Sunset" I have the pleasure of a visit from David R. Becker, a friend and wonderful watercolorist, who is out in California teaching at the Art Methods and Materials show in Burbank. He brought me some water miscible oils from Holbein to try, and this 8 x 10 inch oil is the result. I tried to use the Color System, and chose a subject without greens intentionally to capture this arid landscape. Although the oils are buttery, they still have the characteristic drag of the water-based oils. I'll stick to my Classic Artist Oils. Sure was fun to visit with David, and we enjoyed dinner, and is our first house guest to stay over.

"Russian Olive in Monument Park" On location to paint the view to the Colorado Rockies from the creek that runs north/south through Colorado Springs. While my two friends went walking, I plunked down and plugged in the Ipod to hear "The DaVinci Code" and painted this 12 x 16 oil. the Russian olive trees are a beautiful smoke gray, like smoke trees in my familiar California desert. I love their contrast against the greens. And of course the sound of trickling water isn't too shabby! It's already to Gaye Smith of Colordo Springs, Colorado. |

I know you've been able to to see the progress of this painting, now it is time to enjoy the finished product! You know, I look at it here in its six inch format, and sigh, because one cannot appreciate this painting's presence any more than looking at the paintings of the Old Masters as depicted in a book. There just isn't much comparison, and this is why I so encourage everyone to go to see art on the walls of museums and on pedestals in hallways of venerable establishments. There is just no experience like standing in front of an original Rembrandt, or a Sir Lawerence Alta-Tadema or an Anders Zorn, in total awe of the execution of brushwork, the use of color, or the incredible ease of the color handling.
That said, perhaps we just ought to enjoy the painting and leave it at that. Yes, this painting is already in the hands of the design team for La Quinta. 36 x 48 inch acrylic.

Well, here it is eleven p.m., and I'm to fly out tomorrow from Lexington airport. However, small problem. There are...ulp...TORNADOS coming. Maybe I'm supposed to stay here for a couple days more? We'll see. Sure was sad to see the great group of students pack up and leave for all different parts of the country. I made wonderful friendships and know they learned a great deal about color and times of day. I will miss them all terribly.
Today's painting is the one I did on Wednesday afternoon as a plein air for the students, to demonstrate on location work, after our regular class. It was cold that evening, unlike the nice weather (temperature-wise!) we're having now. I sat looking over one of the warmup rings, where some of the youthful riders were prepping their mounts for the competition for that show of jumpers the Kentucky Horse Park just had. It was fun laying in the clouds in this "sky" painting, even though they eventually brought TORNADOS! This is a 12 x 9 inch oil, and was painted in about 40 minutes, and depicts late afternoon light, before the orange of evening colors everything up. You might be able to buy it if we survive the night of TORNADOS. Egad...

"Evening Light, SRP" Below is the painting that came off my brushes when I first set up, at the gala at the Riverside Art Museum on Friday night. It is a larger painting, 16 x 20 on board-backed canvas, and I surely enjoyed painting it. Out of my head, from countless memories of the Santa Rosa Plateau. In the days prior to the event, the desert skies to the east had been filled with tropical moisture, creating these wondrous thunderheads. From the Plateau it is possible to see these, which dissipate as the sun sets. The orange-y light of the approaching evening, and the dry grasses of the meadows create the compliment of the sky in the distance over the desert.
And I always love pathways...where are we going today?

"Outstanding, in his Field" Today my beloved and I renewed our wedding vows as we have done for the last eight years, followed by a picnic and an enjoyable afternoon together. It's been a bit cold lately, so I am reminded of another October painting time, and backlit aspens came off the brushes when I returned to the studio. I like to think of how special my spouse is, like that one green pine in the midst of those golden aspens. I bet many of you saw the aspens first? That's because we have each one the unique vision to find the match for ourselves. Aspens for one, a pine tree for another. Original oil, 9 x 12 inches...
to collector Suzanne Winchester of Plano, Texas.

"In the Place of Peace" I have done many plein air paintings, and many have been favorites. I still have this one, which hasn't been on display or on the web site for a year or more. Since I spent most of today working on the design of the back cover for Horses in Art's summer issue, I thought you might enjoy a "resurrection" (so to speak!) of an earlier painting. I loved it when I painted it, and I still love it today, most especially for the brushwork and the different values of gray on the statue of Jesus. But unless it speaks to you, it will remain in my personal collection. Original oil on canvas glued to birch backboard, 16 x 12 inches. It was done on location at the Pala Mission, south of Temecula and east of Fallbrook. One of the string of California missions from San Diego northwards. Great place to paint.

"Smoke Trees" This is a 16 x 20 canvas for today's painting, and I had fully intended to do this one in stages, to show the different points of development--sort of an online lesson. But.... I went into the studio to start this one, and it just got ahold of me and wouldn't let go! I just fought and released myself long enough to escape to the computer to send this to you. It is 90-100% finished now, and I'm quite pleased with it. Now I'm not going back in there, because I just might paint all night! If I do tweak it some more, I'll post an update on June's archive at the dailypaintings.com site.
For those of you not familiar with the low deserts of California, in the dry washes you can find smoke trees, so named because from a distance their spiny, leafless branches give the impression of smoke. In the summer months they have purple blooms. Hardy to a fault, they grow to about 20 feet.

I thought you'd like to see the painting from the plein air hike today. I met up with several local painters, and headed out to paint the commission for the two docents at the Santa Rosa Plateau. This is a commission that was raffled off last September to raise funds for the transportation of the third graders who visit the Plateau and learn about California's habitats and animals. This program changes children's lives. Thousands of kids hike the plateau on guided tours and receive lessons at the Visitor's Center. The bus transportation is provided with help from the Foundation, as districts are strapped for money, and there are always more third graders.
The hike in and out was four miles, and I pulled my golf cart easel over rocks and along narrow trails to get to this viewpoint. Well worth it, because I know you'll be able to get the "feel" for what this place means to me, and to the docents in looking at this vista. Now, the lower right section is finished, as they asked me to add eight people (six grand children and themselves) in the lower right. But this 15 x 30 canvas was a pure pleasure to paint in the afternoon light! |
 |
"Snowy Path" It sure was a lot of fun to go to Hemet and do a demonstration for my friends and artists in this nearby city. I decided to do pines in snow, since I'd also started a smaller, similar painting in the studio. This one is 20 x 16, original oil

Bidwell Mansion Quick Draw Just before the heat of the morning on Saturday morning, all of the artists gathered at the mansion in downtown Chico (where I later lost my cell phone), and set up for painting. We had an hour and a half to create a unique piece of work. This one was mine, and I chose the design where people see the mansion from the bridge over the creek. Every time someone would come across the span, my entire setup would jiggle up and down! Original oil on board (thank you Betty!) 20 x 16 inches. |
