EARLY BIRDS! Welcome to Art 100, Art Appreciation Online

BEFORE THE COURSE OPENS ON AUGUST 17, YOU CAN DO THESE THINGS:

1. Order the Textbook. Buy the Textbook. Find the Textbook.

The textbook for this class is required, buy it immediately and get it in your hands as quickly as possible. The title is "Prebles' Artforms" (9th Edition) by Patrick Frank, Duane Preble and Sarah Preble. You can use the links below to order the book at Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.com, or you can purchase it at other online vendors or the MSJC Campus Bookstores. You can also buy the Eighth edition, although some of the chapter names and numbering may be different.

MSJC Bookstores carry a "Custom" version of Prebles' Artforms. You can buy this new for under $100. However, there are many used versions of the books below, and all will work for the course. I have not found the "custom" version online.

2. Write down the course email address and don't use any other.

Your course email for communicating with the instructor is

art100@elinart.com

Please put your section number and your first and last name in the subject or body of the email. Many first and last names are duplicated in my courses, so to get a quick reply, I need to know who you are and what section you are in.

If you use the MSJC instructor email (ppendleton@msjc.edu ) there is a good chance that your email will be lost in the administrative and internal emails that the college generates.

3. Check your MSJC email at least weekly and know how to check it.

Your instructor sends email to you throughout the semester, and MSJC requires instructors to use your MSJC email. Your email through the college is the way your instructor will contact you. If you have another email and use that to contact me, I'll reply to that one; however, your MSJC email is used to send information out about the course.

4. Download "Flash" for your computer (if you don't have it)

Flash is a software that will help the browser of your computer display motion graphics and animations, which are on many of the sites you will visit during the course. When you go the the site linked below, you will be given instructions on how to download and install this software.

FIVE DAYS BEFORE THE SEMESTER BEGINS, YOU CAN DO THESE:

5. Post an introduction in the Discussion Board.

Visit the class Discussion Board (in the list on the left side while you are in the Art 100 area) and post a paragraph about yourself. Please state that you have taken the policies and procedures quiz, and mention anything you would like other class members to know, perhaps including comments about your educational goals, your job and family, why you're taking the course, and anything else of interest. These posts generally set the tone of the class--some classes are really chatty, others are very business-like.

IMPORTANT: You must post an introduction within TWO DAYS after the beginning date of the semester or you will be dropped from the class. NO EXCEPTIONS!

This is a very popular course and many students are already on a waitlist to take your place!

6. Review and Learn About the Art 100 Site.

Read through all the information listed under the buttons labeled Course Information, Course Documents and Coursework (Links in the sidebar [left side] of the course's home page). Allow up to an hour for reading. Go to the Lectures button on the left and listen to the instructor's welcome message under "Orientation" in the lectures list.

7. Take the Orientation Quiz

This is a graded quiz to check that you understand the way the course is run. You may choose to do the Practice Quiz first to see how quizzes are done. Go to the button labeled "Quizzes" on the left, and look for the one named "Orientation". You may save the answers to your questions and continue with the quiz another time. Please submit it when you are finished.

You must take this quiz and post your score as part of entering the course.
